Many home design magazines have perfect rooms that express the best of today’s home trends and designs. People spend hundreds of dollars on home decorating magazines piecing together a collage that will transform their home into a showplace.

After spending ten to fifty thousand dollars, most homeowners give up and settle for second best. This is unfortunate, because with a few designer tricks, any home can be turned into a showplace.

The first trick to creating a magazine quality room in your home is to understand the concept of direct and indirect lighting. Many of the rooms in magazines use ambient lighting with soft bulbs, often golden hued, to give the room a warm glow.

A white light can leave the most beautiful room looking garish. In fact, if you take a look at many ‘before and after’ photos, the ‘before’ room is flooded with a harsh white light. The window treatments are pulled back so that the outside landscape contaminates the room.

Any richly decorated room will be ruined if a large picture window floods the room with bright greens and street black. Take a second look at the after pictures. Often, the outdoors is filtered out. This could be accomplished by putting a reflective coating on the window, or photographing the room at night and then ‘imposing’ the outdoor scene back in the window.

Graphic artist play a major role in creating those perfect rooms. A careful look at some rooms may show that the artist put a blue, gold, or beige film over the picture. While this cheating can result in a major disappointment for most home decorators, it does not mean that you cannot recreate the same effect in your home by playing with light, changing light shade colors, exchanging direct light for ambient light.

Many rooms can be improved by eliminating the ceiling light, or drastically changing it. Think mood when looking for a ceiling light. Most decorators think of ceiling fans, or decorative ceiling lights.

Color should be the first focus when purchasing a light. The room defines the type of light. A bedroom should have the lowest lamination in the light. The dining room and kitchen should have the brightest.

The shade has a major impact on the light’s ability to create mood. Many rooms can be improved by removing a clear glass, or white gloss, ceiling light for a dull, gold shade.

Lampshades that refract light add color to the room and highlight dull areas. Smooth, mute shades blend the colors in a room, letting the eye rest and creating warmth.

Before changing the furniture and lighting, take a look at the walls. The slightest color change on the wall will change a room dramatically. Many ‘perfect’ bedrooms have textured walls that absorb the light instead of reflecting it back into the room.

There are several easy ways to add texture to a wall. Adding a thin coating of stucco and sand to the wall, then painting over it, will destroy a large wall’s ability to reflect light. This type of treatment is used in rooms that need to be dark – even when illuminated.

The opposite is true for bright rooms. Use gloss paints, bright colors, and glass or metals that will twist and refract the light, breaking up the colors, and adding an almost invisible brightness to the room.

Can you hang a ceiling fan light as a regular light(not attached to the fan) - such as a flushmount?

How can i conquer my obsessive compulsive disorder?
i tried drugs (ie prescription meds), but i had a reaction to every type i tried (i’m obviously allergic, but have NO idea what i’m allergic too- some chemical i assume). My doctor won’t prescribe anything else, he just said i have to take it easy & TRY not to obsess (he has NO idea what to do without the use of meds, typical doctor lol).. If anybody has suffered with the likes of OCD & conquered it WITHOUT the use of drugs, please shed some light, and post anything & everything you tried & felt worked ( i don’t care HOW ludicrous they seem, i’ll try anything! i understand there are many types of OCDs… mine is that i repeatedly make sure that all taps aren’t dripping, that the gear/brake on all the cars are either in park/up, and making sure that all the kitchen appliances are off (toaster, oven, stove). my biggest obsession is my room, and continually cleaning it, pulling it apart, and redecorating everything, at least twice a day. Then i get sick of what i own in my room, so i start making lists after lists of what i need to buy to create a better room (a perfect room), where everything has its place, and nothing is positioned near something completely random (eg it stresses me out when i have a sock in my underwear drawer, or a scarf in my belts drawer, or a certain colored item near another colored item that doesn’t match (hate the color black unless its near a pink, white or light gray item)… i know it sounds CRAZY, but i just can’t help it. I NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. throughout highschool, my room was messy, uncoordinated & not even thought about. Then my room was just a place to sleep in & do my homework. i have NO idea what changed since then… im 23 now by the way.

I know what you mean and I had it very bad as a kid and thank God when I moved out of the house it helped alot but didn’t actually diminish until I took an antidepressant. Effexor (the drug)was amazing for OCD. Good luck and doing things to make yourself happy is huge!

Therapy has helped many people. There are many different types of therapy including individually talking with a psychologist, support groups, and exposure therapy which aims to eventually let you overcome obsessions and the panic that occurs when they are not acted out (eg so that you no longer feel the need to check and re-check appliances, or panic if you force yourself not to). Many people have conquered this disorder, so the best of luck to you as well. The websites in my sources are full of useful information.

Believe it or not, but OCD is one of the easiest disorders to cure… it’s basically just an anxiety disorder . But you don’t need drugs to cure it. You may have had some sort of traumatizing event happen later on in your life that you weren’t able to control so now you’re obsessed with doing repetitive pointless acts that you KNOW you can control. GO SEE A SPECIALIST!! The problem with going to a psychiatrist is that in the world we live in now there’s a "magic pill" that seems to disguise every ailment. Find someone who wants to cure you and not one who wants to make money and drug you up. Depending on how bad your OCD is you should be able to find a good PSYCHOLOGIST that can cure you in a week. Maybe a month at most. You have to find new ways to ease your anxiety and direct your energy. I promise, there’s plenty of people that specialize in this department. Good luck!

cars BETTER stay in park. when you put the brake up, it will stay up. don’t even think twice about it later on just remember the brake is up and nooooooooo worries. unplug what you can when you’re not using it, like the toaster or a blender or whatever. leaky faucets are ANNOYING and sometimes costly. another annoying thing is when my friends leave their wiper blades on after the rain stopped. AHHHH I GO BEZZZZZZZERK!!!!!!!!!!!! that’s one of my very worst peeves, if not THEE worst.. that sound of rubber… worse than a chalkboard to me. i literally start twitching from that sound. anyways high school i wasn’t the cleanest person, but i was nutty. when i was 17 i met a guy who put marijuana in my face. i smoked it. i laughed my butt off at my own insecurities. i became totally enlightened from it. yes that’s right im recommending you puff that mary jane. i am extremely relaxed– a MUCH more easy-going person than i was before. all it took was that one time and im set for life. it’s like it erased all my troubles. like cheating. i even became a cleaner person. my home is organized. well more than before. it’s weird some people get paranoia from it, but it helps ease those who already have paranoia. it interests me how this stuff is still illegal especially when cigarettes and alcohol are worse. im definitely not gonna recommend those two… anyways your life your choice. if not that then yoga. that’s all i got.

    Hello Bella !
I need to know what medications have you tried? Write their generic names. ALso what kind of allergic reaction have you been having. Many times its not an allergic reaction, but some sort of side effect of the drug.
I would recommend you to change your doctor too. You should consult an experienced psychiatrist. This can help in many ways, one that a psychiatrist is more experienced and trained in your particular case, as compared to a G.P or a medical specialist. And other that a new doctor will start studying your case from the beginning, and start your management in new lines.
Also some things can help, like:
Ask your family to divide tasks between them, like one of you checks the front door lock at night, another checks the back door lock, and another checks the windows. And dont allow each other to interfere into your territory.
Try to share your room with someone, and ask him/her to not to prevent you from doing frequent changes, same principle can apply here by dividing room space and cupboard drawers between each other, and not allowing trespassing.
In this way you will continuously be getting prevented from doing what you are craving to do. Its long process but is worth giving a try.
You can also add punishments in case of trespassing each other’s territory, like not allowing favourite tv program for one episode, or having to order pizza or burger for all etc.

Feel free to ask if you have any further querry. You can email me if you want to tell me the above mentioned questiones i asked.

    Regards,
    Dr. Zeeshan Chattha.
