I’m trying to install a ceiling fan in my bedroom, For some reason it’s making a loud sound when I test the speed. What’s causing that noise?

If your fan is humming than you probably have to screw the blades tighter.

Susan, you need to provide more details.

Is it a humming noise? That would indicate that the mechanism can’t turn, possible sources: there is locking screw that you need to remove. You can test this by turning the fan by hand. Other possible source: you did not wire properly.

Is it a tac-tac sound? Unbalanced fan is probably the issue here. Your manual will tell you how to properly balance.

If the fan is unbalanced. I would check the distance from the leading edge of the fan blade to the ceiling on each blade. If you find a variance of over a quarter of an inch simply bend the blade hanger/s so they are all the same. The outside leading edge and inside leading edge should be different. So you must measure at the same point on each blade. Also make sure the electric box in the ceiling is not loose. A loud hum could indicate a voltage or wiring problem.
