Chill Out with Ceiling Fans

Today, just less than sixty years after the classic movie Casablanca, which made ceiling fans famous, these technological marvels are back in the public eye. The cause for the fuss this time is that ceiling fans are a good way to save energy while keeping cool in the hot summer months. With a ceiling fan you can cool down at a lower cost, saving on high energy bills.

Ceiling fans work by circulating the air, which makes us feel cooler because it causes the air that hits our skin to vaporize the moisture in our skin. More circulation of air translates to more coolness. In addition, a ceiling fan can be used to augment the benefits of air conditioning.

Experts advise setting the air conditioning to 78 degrees, then using the ceiling fan to make the room even cooler. Every time you raise the setting on your air conditioning a single point, it knocks three to five percent off the cost of running that air conditioning unit. Setting the air conditioning six degrees higher than what youre used to will probably save you as much as thirty percent of the cost of running that air conditioning unit. If you run the air condition six degrees higher and run a ceiling fan at the same time youll feel just as cool as if the air conditioning was running at the regular level.

Fans burn as much energy as a standard 100 Watt light bulb. Central air conditioning uses fifty to sixty times as much electricity as a ceiling fan does. Using just ceiling fans work out to great savings in the home.

But guess what, ceiling fans are not only useful during the summer. Reverse the direction of rotation of the fan blades from anticlockwise to clockwise and the air now begins to be forced upward. This means that the fan, when set to a low speed, will gently push the hot air that gathers at the top of the ceiling, so that it goes back down into the room and all around the room. You can save as much as ten percent on heating costs in the winter using this process, according to reports.

You need the right fan for a room, for it to work properly. The most common size is the fifty two inch blade. This is good for rooms smaller than 400 square feet. The 44 inch fan works for rooms up to 225 square feet, and the 36 inch fan is for rooms 100 square feet or less.

There are speed settings: Fast, medium and slow. You want a fan that can rotate at a speed sufficient to circulate the air the way it should, and you want a fan that doesnt make to much noise.

The best place to put a ceiling fan is in a room where you spend a lot of time, like the living room or the bedroom. Many people install ceiling fans in place of regular light fixtures, especially since most fans today have lights attached. This way, the fan and the light can be in the middle of the room and they can both be operated by the same switch mechanism.
